Dear Lucie,
I have no words and yet so much to say. You are, without a doubt, one of the best friends I have ever had. Whilst my heart is broken having to write this, it is also so full knowing that I had the privilege of knowing you and being your friend, not to mention all the amazing adventures and memories I have to cherish.
As the classic overthinker I am, I’ve thought long and hard how I can best write a tribute to you and our wonderful friendship. In the end, I decided the most apt way would be a ‘game’ of Remember When – one we played over and over to laugh at the funny things one another did, said or the fun memories we never wanted to forget. I don’t want to forget a single moment of the joy you brought to my life, so here goes…
1. Remember when you thought you’d seen a celebrity in 100VE until we realised it was just ‘Andy from Foods’ who had been in a video in the Watergate Auditorium about 30 mins earlier.
2. Remember when we laughed at other people’s team names but then ironically became obsessed with a Dot water bottle that TEAM DOT was formed, a bond never to be broken and we arguably took it way too far with coordinating dot outfits and infinite references to dots. Let’s face it, nobody else really got it, but I quite like it that way
3. Remember when we came up with secret nicknames for everyone and when we told Camillo we called him Papa Cool, he thought we were calling him the pope #lostintranslation
4. Remember when we watched Royal Family documentaries and drank ALL the prosecco when I was staying at yours (Apricots) and you agreed to dress up as Prince Harry playing rugby for my 90s themed 30th birthday party? In the end, I didn’t bother with a theme but never one to go back on a promise, you came in a rugby polo and a Prince Harry mask and it was the best surprise of the entire night. Thank you for ALWAYS keeping your promises, you are one in a million.
5. Remember when I surprised you for your birthday (which I loved despite your ‘bday curse’) and we went to go see the Strictly Ballroom Musical but the birthday curse struck again and there was a burst pipe half way through the performance and we had to down two pints of gin and scarper. It was a good excuse to go back though and thoroughly worth the wait.
6. Remember when we went to Rainforest Café the night before your birthday and I got the waiters to sing Happy Birthday to you, like they do for all the kids. You hated the attention but loved the joke. I will watch that video back on your birthday every year.
7. Remember when you pronounced your own middle name wrong 20 minutes after lecturing me about the origins of its pronunciation.
8. Remember when we became obsessed with THE BOOT and I finally realised it was the modern-day version of a cast. I have a ridiculous number of boot photos from all around the world but the best sighting was definitely when you met a group of lads on the tube who ALL had a boot. Not only was this quite the sighting but you also struck up conversation with randoms on the tube for it, which in itself was quite unusual! We laughed about this memory just the week before you left us.
9. Remember when we would spend all night in the photo booth at every UL event
10. Remember when the only thing RST liked about our GBHC was the agenda slide. Fortunately not at all reflective of how utterly brilliant you were at your job, this nobody can deny
11. Remember when you came to visit me in Amsterdam and we loved the ‘all you can drink’ canal boat so much that we ditched other plans and went back on it, because booze + canals = what’s not to love?
12. Remember when I thought witnessing your mortgage was a huge honour and then became obsessed with Apricots. You later explained it was more a ‘right time, right place’ situation, but given how important I thought it was, convinced me you would need to do the same when I bought a place. I’ll have to think long and hard who possibly deserves that honour when the time comes.
13. Remember when we went to the Steps reunion concert with Tor and Beth and you made us 5, 6, 7, 8 t-shirts. That was a fantastic day. Steps was a huge part of my childhood but their songs, particularly One for Sorrow, will always remind me of you now.
14. Remember when we formed the spirit animal committee. We were very good at it but none were as accurate as mine and yours. You are a cat, Lucie Wood. I love the cat / dolphin video on YouTube that just perfectly summed up our friendship #needy
15. Remember when we went to see dolphins in Bali!! The most magical morning. On balance, I think you felt it was worth the car sickness
16. Remember when you taught me all the random things, phrases etc. that I never knew I needed to know? Yes, you are a “card”, but I love you for that. Also all the Casanove Crew screenshots of you calling each other cards just really cemented my understanding of that particular term!
17. Remember when we wore matching gold dot outfits for the CMCO party and made Nick pose with all the pop art statues
18. Remember when every night out had to include a video of us singing and dancing to Despacito and it legit never got old
19. Remember when I realised that the best way to know if you were drunk was how squeaky your voice got
20. Remember when we were mentioned in Nick’s best man’s speech at his Bali wedding?!
21. Remember when we got FAR too carried away at Finns Beach Club in Bali for Nick’s wedding party, then needed ALL the soft drinks by the pool the next day. Your choice of hangover drinks still baffles me to this day – aloe juice anyone?!
22. Remember when you refused to go on the hotel slide in Seminyak because you were far too old to be doing childish things like that, but then sneaked on it on the way back from the room just to prove to me that you are an enigma, and you will find ways to shock me
23. Remember when every weekend was all about Strictly and if one of us had actual social plans, it was terrible news indeed
24. Remember when you started saying SO GREAT all the time and I had no idea you were taking the mick out of me (or that I said it so much), but it stuck in the end and it was sort of a Team Dot thing
25. Remember when we went out for drinks with RST, Chet and Oz and it was so random and so funny and neither of us remember why we found it so funny
26. Remember when we climbed up a VOLCANO!!! Ok, so you hated the climbing bit and it was blooming freezing at the top, but the sunrise views were spectacular and I was so proud you managed it with your “Nemo fin”, and of course you didn’t complain at all. You always put others wishes first, such an incredibly special and unique trait
27. Remember when we went on swings over the Balinese rice fields and it was just wonderful
28. Remember when I got promoted and we went for Team Dot celebration drinks by the Thames and the London sky was so dreamy we decided to do a photo shoot. That photo is still your WhatsApp photo and I love it so much
29. Remember when we became obsessed with One Sec Camera. Nick and I will continue the tradition in your honour but it will never be the same without you. How grateful I am to have all those hilarious little moments stitched together to treasure forever
30. Remember when we went to Windsor Castle to see Meghan Markle’s wedding dress on display and it was just magical. So magical in fact, we got our passes converted to annual ones and you took your mum and relived the experience all over and had “the best time ever” once again. You will always be Meghan’s #1 fan, you’d have LOVED the interview she did with Oprah
31. Remember when I was leaving London to move to the Netherlands and you made me Remember When playing cards. I’ll treasure them, all of these and so many other memories with you forever
32. Remember when we were working out how you “CMI family” was. You were the best pretend big sister, the greatest confidante, supporter and most wonderful friend I could have ever wished for
I am so incredibly lucky to have shared these and so many more precious moments with you. Your values, strength and self-assurance have been such an inspiration to me and so many others. Your friendship meant and still does mean the world to me. You will forever be one of the greatest people I have ever known.
I love and miss you so very much, Lucie Wood. This is “the worst”.
All my love always, Laura Gray xxx
